How Do People Abuse Valium?
Often, valium addiction begins when it is used to curb the withdrawal symptoms of other drugs like heroin. Clients will also use Valium in combination with opiates like Vicodin, Hydrocodone, Oxycontin and Percocet.
Most commonly, patients will swallow the pill, but others prefer to chew the pill first and then swallow. Depending on the version of valium, it maybe a sublingual version, where the pill dissolves under the tongue.
Unlike other opiates like heroin, users will not normally snort or inject Valium into their system because it does not create the same rush. Ultimately, a higher tolerance is easily built in short periods of time if Valium is abused.
Signs of Valium Addiction:
- Saying they have increased anxiety while currently on medication
- Trying to obtain refills more often
- Trying to get higher doses prescribed to them
- Finding empty ziploc bags, this is normally how pills come from street dealers
- Pill Bottles from multiple doctors
- Finding pill bottles with other people’s names on it
- Missing labels on pill bottles
- Blank Prescription pads for forging prescriptions
- Missing family events, isolating themselves
- Changes in hobbies
Treating Valium Addiction
The treatment is similar to any other substance, where the user has lost their will power and physically addicted to Valium.
We begin treatment with a detox phase where we remove Valium from the patient, but we ensure safety and make it more comfortable with a medical assisted detox. This process occurs in free standing facilities licensed by the state, and licensed medical staff on site 24/7 who monitor and help the clients through the process.
Once detox has completed, the most important phase begins. This is the inpatient treatment phase where clients learn how to stay sober for the long term. Our programs are designed with 30 years of hands on experience. We help our clients understand why they are addicted, what is addiction, how to never use again, and we pass on the tools they need to stay sober for life.
The final phase is the outpatient where clients have rejoined society, but they are still attending part time counseling, group and other addiction treatment services at one of our outpatient facilities.
Detox Symptoms of Valium:
Detoxing from Valium and other Benzodiazepines needs to be done in a medically supervised environment and at no time should be attempted alone or “cold turkey”. There are significant risk factors from detoxing from benzos including seizures, comas and other fatal outcomes. Detox medications will need to be prescribed and vitals closely monitored to help with symptom reduction while the body begins functioning without the benzo in the system.
- Unstable vitals
- Muscle pain and weakness
- Intestinal cramping
- Headaches
- Increased anxiety
- Increased risk of seizures
- Tremors
- Vomiting
- Sweating
- Insomnia or restlessness
- Possibility of numbness
